WEEK OF SILENCE 2007 is taking place this coming week, March 12th to 16th!|
For those of you who are new to WoS or need a refresher course, here's the general deal:
The Week of Silence is an annual event in which volunteers strive to be absolutely silent for five days and nights. The intent is to raise awareness about sexual abuse and assault. Friends and family sponsor us financially, with all the proceeds going to the Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network (RAINN) in the WoS name.
This will be the third year running. In 2006 we had hundreds of participants from all over the world--the US, UK, Mexico, South Africa, Australia, Sweden, Taiwan....
As for those participants who are in school, for the past years most people have made index cards explaining what they are doing and why, which they handed to their teachers and professors. (Often, these same cards read "Can I go to the bathroom?" on the back!)
Ask any questions you like here, and if you're planning to participate, we'd appreciate it if you'd let us know.
You can also reach us by e-mail at firstname.lastname@example.org
~Ros and Chelly, directors
"If the occurence of rape were audible, its decibel level equal to its frequency, it would overpower our days and nights, interrupt our meals, our bedtime stories, howl behind our lovemaking, an insistent jackhammer of distress. We would demand an end to it. And if we failed to locate its source, we would condemn the whole structure. We would refuse to live under such conditions." - Patricia Weaver Francisco
